The Release Plan

After more than thirty years of incarceration, freedom is no longer a distant idea Malik and Lena can discuss safely. It is close enough to make plans around — and close enough to expose what both of them are afraid to say.

The moment

They have planned for freedom for years. Planning is not the same as being ready.

Malik has spent years talking about home as something in the future: where he will sleep, what he will do first, how ordinary life might feel. Lena has spent those same years building a life that already exists — work, family, routines, responsibilities, and a place she has imagined making room for him inside.

Now another parole hearing is expected in 2026, even though no date has been set. That uncertainty changes the conversation. A release plan is no longer only paperwork. It is a test of what each of them thinks happens when prison stops organizing their relationship for them.

For Malik, freedom means choice after decades of having choices made for him. For Lena, freedom means the person she has loved across distance may suddenly be present for the ordinary, unedited parts of life. Neither fear cancels the love. Both fears make the love more complicated.

The hardest part is not deciding whether they want the future. It is admitting that the future will require them to meet each other again.

Lena hears

“Will the future we planned still include me?”

Her fear is not simply that Malik might leave. It is that years of sacrifice and expectation may have created a version of reunion that reality cannot reproduce exactly.

Malik hears
